In this temporary world sometimes people get attracted to wordly desires
In this case how to get control over our nafs ?
One must devote some time every day to contemplate about his duties towards God, Who brought him into this world, bestowed him with a sound body and brain, and equipped him with intellect and capabilities, all of which are sources of pleasure and joy in his life. God also sent prophets and His Holy Book as a means of guidance and salvation. The aim of this life and purpose of all these blessings is more noble than to follow mundane desires and evil tendencies that are short lived and temporary
This is a bit mystical, one must learn to detach himself, eat simple, wear simple, and live a simple life i.e try to live like imam ali(a) even if its for a grain of sand and if you’ll bind yourself to this worldly life then you’ll become its captive in return! Don’t sell your freedom and try not to follow desires of your nafs! The more you’ll tend to stay in your comfort zone the more you’ll be enslaved by your nafs, kill your comfort… also if you think that your freedom is being taken away and you are being enslaved by your nafs then punish your nafs and oppress it! But this punishment and oppression should be spiritual i.e for example recite a tasbeeh of salawat and that would be the best thing to do! the more your nafs enslaves you the more you have to oppress and punish it.
Getting control over the nafs is basically, making your nafs listen to you. Making it be obedient to you. And this can be done when you do not work upon your desires. It means, our nafs always wants comfort and pleasure, and thus makes us do the things which give the worldly or temporary pleasure, so to keep yourself out of that comfort zone and do exactly opposite to what your nafs wants, helps alot in gaining control over nafs… Like if you offer the isha prayer and you have a sudden thought of not offering the extra 2 rakats as they’re not mandatory! You must seize your mind out of that thought and breaking all the shackles of pleasing fantasies that your nafs has created, say, that now i’ll offer four rakkat prayers!! two rakat nafl and two rakkat of namaz e shukur as well.. this way your nafs can be under your control mostly!!
