Sermon – 82 of Nahj al Balagha
(When Imam ALI A.S. decided to set out from Kufa to face the rebellion of Kharijites at Nahrawan, Afif one of his companions told him not to undertake the journey just then because according to astrology it was an inauspicious moment, and his journey would not end in victory. Imam ALI A.S. replied to him in the following words:)
Do you think that you are competent enough to tell of a time when a journey, if attempted, would end in a failure of the mission, and you are qualified enough to frighten anybody to believe that if an expedition is undertaken at a particular moment it would result in loss and disaster! Whoever testifies or accepts your assertions falsifies the teachings of the Qur’an, and is indifferent towards the Mercy and Kindness of Allah SWT. in allowing to secure objects that he wishes to have and in averting misfortunes and calamities. Besides this your declaration makes the point clear that those who believe in your assertions should praise you instead of Allah SWT. , because you can always direct them to act at such opportune moments when they will always gain and never lose or suffer. ( Saying this to Afif, the Imam A.S. turned towards those who had gathered there and said ) :
O People ! Abstain from learning and believing in astrology. Accept only those facts ( of astronomy ) which will guide you on land and sea, because astrology will lead you towards magic, witchcraft and charlatanry. An astrologer is like a magician ( who practices in black magic ) and such a magician is an infidel, and all infidels shall go to Hell. You should commence your journey in the name of Allah SWT.

Motive should be to attain Taqwa and to achieve excellence in whatsoever we do professionally.

Imam Ali says, “Anyone who remembers death frequently saves himself from the hypocrisies of the world”.
Death may come knocking at any time. This world is a place of doing good actions that result in permanent joy and take one into a higher sphere of existence. A person should therefore reflect on his destiny and his helplessness at the hands of time and age that are passing. He should feel regret before God for the loss of precious years of life and for past deeds that will bring him shame on the day of judgement. He should then begin his struggle to rise above this state of wretchedness and ask God for help to bless him with hope, sincerity, and strength to fight against satanic tendencies and evil traits of character, and to rise beyond material pleasures and worldly gains.
